To achieve the whole efficiency of the seals two aspects of the surrounding construction should be considered.
The examples below are showing two simple solutions with a disc in front of the seals for type L and type S.

Labyrinth seal type L with a disc

Gap seal type S with a disc
Large quantities of liquids facing the seal
Use of the "M"-type
Use of the "M"-type seal with sufficiently dimensioned drain groove and drain hole. The grooves of the "M"-type seal may be used to improve the seal efficiency by using an air compression system to blow penetrating liquid out of the system.
Tandem adjustment
You should try to prepare enough space for the sealing assembly, to allow using two labyrinth seals in a row with a space of at least 5 mm width in between. Thus penetrating liquids may calm down and may be drained back by a drain hole placed in between the two seals.
Usage of the Sa type (for rotating shaft) and Si type (for rotating housing) - (not illustrated)
Please note that the gap seals are sealing only in one direction (the bigger diameter faces always the contamination). If the seal has to work in both directions, 2 gap seals have to be used necessarily:
Tandem arrangement for double sided sealing effect by gap seals
Two seals are arranged in a row with different orientation (distance min. 5 mm). Possibly penetrating liquids can be drained off between the seals.
