Non-contact seals are made of two rings with a special shaped profile creating a labyrinth in between. The geometric design of the labyrinth forces any contamination to several changes of its direction when trying to pass the seal. The full sealing effect is achieved at high rotation speed when some kind of air cushion in the sealing gap is created.
The rings are loosely connected in one single unit. With the assembly the rings must be centred to find the non-contact position.
Non-contact seals are the perfect solution to all high speed applications.
An additional usage which is quite common is the combination of a non-contact seal in front of a simple contact seal. The non-contact seal is protecting the contact seal from rough contamination and so the life time of the complete system could be increased.
